WeChat - China

Recently I read about a social media known as the WeChat on this article,

A platform developed by a Chinese company known as Tencent QQ.

And because recently we went to Guangzhou, China, it baffles me to this day that the main social media platform that the people of China uses is just WeChat! (Not unless there are privileged people who would pay for VPN access - an application to use international social media) They do have other social media platforms but WeChat has more active users than any other platforms.

But other than that,

WeChat: has over 900 million active users monthly, worldwide.

And according to the article mentioned above,

"WeChat’s growth still shows no sign of slowing, either. For example, there is a significant, untapped opportunity to monetize this vast user base through advertising, gaming, and payment processing."

When I was in China, I had to try to use WeChat for direction, maps and everything including using the WeChat search engine.

I understand that with this social media application, you can do almost everything with it but unfortunately when I tried using the map/directions using WeChat, everything was in Pingyin (Chinese writings) which I cannot read for the death of me.

So the only thing I use WeChat for is just to send text messages or call my friends and family internationally.

Last but not least, in China itself there are a lot of QR codes in every single store you would visit and these QR codes are connected to WeChat! yet again.

I must say these people are very innovative and technologically savvy but not foreigner friendly when it comes to WeChat.

However to conclude, I am very thankful that WeChat works internationally, if not, I wont be able to talk or text my family members and friends back home! Which will always be one of my biggest concerns when I am abroad (Local Sim Card, Wifi, Communication Locally & Abroad)
